Summer Comfort Foods
The Anderson picnic for the fourth of July celebration brought
together essentially all of the Anderson family and relatives for the sharing of
comfort foods. Family gatherings foster fond memories. They generate stories for
the future of, "Remember that time when..." that is passed on from one year to the
next. The little Anderson kids would often respond, "Cool!" That's what the
Anderson picnics were about.
When little Jimmy went to college, he would tell his new friends about
the annual Anderson event. Most of his friends were jealous. Those who seemed
uninterested were really envious on the inside. Jimmy would compare the cafeteria
food with comfort foods he had at the picnic. This was especially the case about
grilled chicken. Of course, there was no comparison.
It was not long before Jimmy had a college girlfriend. To his
pleasant surprise, she was very interested in knowing more about the Anderson picnic
and the comfort foods that were served. She especially enjoyed hearing about which
Anderson family member prepared which dish. Her small family had a similar picnic
on an annual basis, and she was curious to learn how Jimmy's family and relatives
celebrated the fourth of July. That summer, Jimmy invited her to the Anderson
picnic.
