Summer Comfort Foods
Family gatherings and picnics relate to memories of comfort foods for
most people. With the Andersons, family members from as far away as Florida
congregate in California for the annual cook out. Everyone was especially looking
forward to great Grandpa Joe's family secret recipe for barbeque. Everything from
fresh caught river trout to quail received the barbeque rub. The grill was a
homemade hearth in the backyard of the second generation Andersons.
As a teenager, Roger grew up learning the trade of barbeque from great
Grandpa Joe. He once used the barbeque rub on soft-shelled crabs. Doing this for
the first time with seafood, the results were rather interesting. The crabs cooked
quickly, but Roger, as a fourteen year old chef-to-be, did not realize this. The
grill was too hot for such a delicacy. Chock it up to experience for picnic comfort
food.
Fortunately for Roger, there were not many crabs to be subjected to
this culinary experiment. After 20 minutes of unattended grilling, the soft-shelled
crabs were not longer soft. The charred remains brought out rounds of laughter from
the other teenagers. Roger, undaunted, called his creation barbeque crab chips.
Great Grandpa Joe laughed the longest and hardest at that joke. These are the types
of memories that comfort foods provide.
