Comfort foods remind people of home and family. It is food that gives them comfort, a sense of family and home. People think of family gatherings, holidays, and special occasions. It does not necessarily have to do with a secret family recipe (although the secret might be that eating gives members of the family a warm feeling of home). It is not surprising that everyone has an image of a family meal.

How was the favorite dish prepared? What made it so special? When a grandmother was asked about the ingredients of a family dish, she just smiled. When pressed, she smiled again. Then she said, "I can't give away Grandma's secret recipe."

The time it takes to make pot roast is but an ingredient of love in the cooking process. Family members gather around the dining room table to witness the ultimate representation of home cooking and loving. Everyone watches Dad carve out the first slices, and Granddad makes comments about how not to cut the meat. The family dog waits for scraps and gets some if he is lucky. Now, that's real comfort food.
