Susie worked at an Italian restaurant. She was asked what she thought of when I asked her what comfort foods were. After she put down a plate of garlic roasted Italian bread, parmesan cheese, and olive oil, she volunteered that oven-roasted chicken came to mind. That is what her grandmother served every Sunday evening when Susie was a child. Grandmother's Sunday chicken is what Susie thought of as a comfort food.

Sunday afternoon meals with the family is a common scenario for the serving of comfort foods. Meals prepared by a grandmother is a typical part of the answer to the question of comfort foods. Oven-roasted chicken and vegetables reminded this individual of family gatherings and warm thoughts of get-togethers. Grandmother's secret family recipe is something that is passed down from one generation to the next. Would the answer always include sides such as vegetables?

How was the chicken prepared? What made it so special? When Susie was asked about the ingredients, she just smiled. When pressed, she smiled again. Then she said, "I can't give away Grandma's secret recipe."
